St Cuthbert’s Way Pilgrimage

Day Two - Maxton to Harestanes

(Approx 4 miles)

Day two’s walk felt quite different in character. Far less rivers and streams, more open farmland  and areas of forest .Though a much shorter walk today, that was a relief as  I adjusted to daily walking

Lilliard and Lilliard’s Edge

800 years ago, the monks of Melrose Abbey erected a great stone here, beside Dere Street Roman road, known as the ‘Lylliot Cross’.

Members of the Scottish and English crowns met here to resolve disputes. Unfortunately, the meetings were unsuccessful and the Battle of Ancrum Moor took place in 1545 resulting in victory for the Scottish Army against a much larger English force.

Today’s walking was mostly through footpaths like this!

Panoramic view  from Lilliard’s Edge and dramatic skies through the woodland…

Beautiful carpets of snowdrops lined the woodlands
