ST CUTHBERT’S WAY PILGRIMAGE

DAY 6

HETHPOOL TO WOOLER

(Approx 8 miles)

After a night of heavy rain, the College Burn ran fast this morning. We passed over several more streams in this damp and misty valley.

The damp mist hung heavy over the hills, deadening sound and obscuring our views, but it was very atmospheric.

In the foothills we saw a herd of feral goats. Wild goats have lived on these hills for centuries

The wind was whistling up in these hills, but we were also accompanied by sounds of sheep, the mournful cries of curlews and the rattling and rather comical alarm calls of grouse as they shot up and flew around us as we walked by.

Even with the grey skies, the views were stunning.

But these hills were bleak, snow covered and boggy underfoot.

Woolie Sheep had come with us on this journey. We put him out to graze but he wasn’t sure about the snow!

It was tricky walking on such boggy ground. What a wild and rugged place this was

Found this graffiti on the ground right up in the hills.

Could this be the Banksy of Northumberland?
